The Rise of Whacky Lingerie in Modern Fashion

By Ella O'Keeffe •

The Trend of Unconventional Lingerie

Over the past five years, underwear-inspired dress codes have established themselves as a pillar of modern style. Now, a fresh vision is emerging. We are moving far beyond simple body exposure. Instead, designers are radically reinventing undergarments that traditionally served purely functional purposes. Stockings, bras, and even breast tape are taking on avant-garde forms to deliver a seductive aesthetic. This shift proves that our relationship with undergarments is evolving rapidly. The era of the plain, basic t-shirt bra and matching underwear is no longer the only acceptable choice.

Belgian designer Julie Kegels stands at the forefront of this movement. Her rising influence was recently validated when she won the LVMH Prize. For her spring-summer 2026 collection, she introduced so-called boobstickers. These unique pieces are crafted from scraps of antique lace, scanned in 3D, and printed directly onto breast tape. The result creates the illusion of a wireless, strapless lace bra. For women who hesitate to expose their bare chests entirely, Kegels provides a clever alternative for experimenting with sheer silhouettes. Continuing this playful exploration for spring-summer 2027, she revisited the concept with nude-colored boobstickers adorned with spiral bead motifs.

Kegels is not alone in redefining underwear codes. Ukrainian fashion graduate Evelina recently went viral with her imaginative interpretation of the naked shoe. Her design fuses lace stockings or high heels directly into sheer socks, creating a single, indivisible garment. A similar fascination with hosiery-like materials appears at Du Ciel. This German brand specializes in lingerie and swimwear designed almost exclusively for artistic impact. A notable example is their Désirbra. Made from seamless mesh, it features a central seam that mimics the back seam of sheer stockings, generating an added sense of mystery and allure.

How to Adopt This Trend

On the runways, major houses are pushing boundaries even further. For spring-summer 2027, KNWLS showcased sleeveless tops featuring inverted bra closures positioned high around the neck. Prada introduced cropped, bra-like tops equipped with tiny metal clips designed to hold miniature coin purses. Meanwhile, at Glenn Martens' spring-summer 2027 show for Margiela, the focus shifted to skin-tight nude t-shirts featuring sculpted nipple outlines. Layered beneath open shirts, they create the illusion of bared skin.

All these examples highlight how designers are subverting conventional notions of lingerie. They are offering hybrid, sensualized versions of our everyday undergarments. The key difference from past trends lies in this brilliant reinvention of functional silhouettes.
