The open-jar symbol with a number followed by M shows how many months the product keeps after it is first opened. That clock runs independently of the printed expiry date on the box.
The PAO period assumes storage at room temperature, away from sunlight and bathroom humidity. A product whose smell, colour or texture has changed goes in the bin whatever the calculation says.

Why does mascara get a shorter limit?
The wand touches the lashes and carries bacteria back into the tube every time. The usual recommendation is three months even when the label says six.
What happens to expired sunscreen?
The filters degrade and the SPF drops with no visible sign. It is the one product where going past the date has immediate consequences.
Does an unopened product expire?
Yes, but on the printed date rather than on PAO. Products with a total shelf life under 30 months are required to show that date.
